We have been blessed to welcome many new patients here in our Direct Primary Care clinic in Nashville! Now that the summertime is here, some patients are interested in addressing troublesome skin conditions. Rashes can be itchy, painful, and sometimes very frustrating. Let’s explore some of the most common types, their causes, and the treatments that can help you find relief.

ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS) – This is a chronic condition that leads to dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It frequently appears in childhood but can persist into adulthood. It can be caused by immune system dysfunction, genetic predispositions, and environmental triggers (like allergens, chemical irritants, and even stress).

Symptoms:

  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Intense itching
  • Dry, scaly patches

Treatment:

  • Moisturizers: Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial.
  • Topical Steroids: Reduce inflammation and itching.
  • Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid irritants that exacerbate the condition.
  • Prescription Medications: In severe cases, oral medications or biologic agents may be prescribed.

CONTACT DERMATITIS – This occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen, causing a rash. It can happen after exposure to chemicals in cleaning products, certain metals (like nickel), cosmetics/fragrances, or (commonly here in Nashville) poison ivy.

Symptoms:

  • Red rash or bumps
  • Blisters or hives
  • Itching and burning

Treatment:

  • Identify and Avoid the Irritant: Determine what caused the reaction and avoid further contact.
  • Topical Steroids: Help reduce inflammation and itching.
  • Cool Compresses: Soothe the affected area.
  • Oral Antihistamines: Help control itching.

PSORIASIS – This is a noncontagious condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells (excessive/rapid growth of the epidermal layer of skin), causing cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. It seems to be related to immune system dysfunction, and has a heavily genetic component. Certain triggers like stress, smoking, and infections can predispose the onset or worsening of psoriasis.

Symptoms:

  • Red patches covered with thick, silvery scales
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
  • Itching, burning, or soreness

Treatment:

  • Topical Treatments: Corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, and retinoids.
  • Light Therapy: Exposing the skin to natural or artificial ultraviolet light.
  • Systemic Medications: Oral or injected medications that affect the whole body, used in severe cases.

HIVES (UTICARIA)– These are raised, itchy welts on the skin that can vary in size and appear anywhere on the body. They can result after allergic reactions to food, medications, or insect stings. Even stimuli like temperature extremes (heat or cold) or stress can bring on uticaria in some patients.

Symptoms:

  • Red or flesh-colored welts
  • Itching, which may be severe
  • Swelling around the welts

Treatment:

  • Antihistamines: Help reduce itching and swelling.
  • Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid substances or conditions that cause hives.
  • Cool Compresses: Soothe the skin.
  • Severe Cases: May require prescription medications or an epinephrine injection.

ATHLETE’S FOOT (TINEA PEDIS) – This is a fungal infection that usually begins between the toes. It can frequently be traced back to warm, moist environments that encourage fungal growth (like locker rooms and public showers).

Symptoms:

  • Scaly, peeling skin between the toes
  • Itching, burning, or stinging
  • Cracked or blistered skin

Treatment:

  • Antifungal Creams: Over-the-counter or prescription options.
  • Keep Feet Dry: Use moisture-wicking socks and change them frequently.
  • Protect Your Feet: Avoid walking barefoot in communal areas.
